RSThe Recovery Shop · A recommendation guide

Buy less. Buy what has a mechanism.

The recovery industry is mostly a catalogue of things that feel scientific. This is the opposite: a short, opinionated shelf of products for each real need, every one graded on evidence and explained in one line of chemistry.

Nothing here is for sale. There is no cart, no checkout, and no affiliate code. Prices are approximate typical retail so the budget filters can do arithmetic; check the retailer for the real number.

How a pick earns its place

Three layers, or it stays off the shelf.

01

Research

Every pick carries the same evidence grade the Truth Engine uses. Where an audit exists, the grade matches it exactly, including when that is a no.

02

Mechanism

One line on what is physically happening: receptors, transporters, conduction, load. If the mechanism cannot be written down, the product is not on the shelf.

03

Protocol

How to use it and the honest catch. Supplements must hold NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport, and anyone under 18 decides with a parent and a clinician.

Supported

The mechanism is real, the evidence is good, and the effect is worth what it costs.

Conditional

It works, but only for a specific goal, dose, timing, or population. The conditions are the whole answer.

Utility

No physiological claim to grade. It holds water, ice, or a book, and it does that reliably.

Underpowered

Plausible mechanism, literature too thin or too badly reported to call. Not a no. Not yet a yes.

Overstated

A real but small effect sold as a large one, usually by borrowing a mechanism from somewhere it does apply.

Unsupported

The claimed mechanism does not survive contact with the literature. The marketing is the product.

Whey Protein Isolate

Protein and fuel

SupportedNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Fast-digesting whey delivers about 2 g of leucine per scoop, which switches on mTORC1, plus all nine essential amino acids to build with.

One scoop after practice covers the roughly 20 to 25 g dose where muscle protein synthesis plateaus for most teenagers.

The catch. Food first. A glass of milk and a real dinner do the same job.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Garden of LifeTop pick

Sport Organic Plant-Based Protein

Protein and fuel

SupportedNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Pea plus legume blend; pea is low in methionine and the blend fills the gap, so 30 g per serving clears the leucine threshold.

The vegan pick. Plant proteins need a slightly bigger dose than whey to hit the same signal, which this one already provides.

The catch. Taste and mixability reviews are mixed. Blend it, do not shake it.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Science in SportTop pick

GO Isotonic Energy Gel

Protein and fuel

SupportedInformed Sport

Mechanism

22 g of maltodextrin pre-diluted to isotonic strength, so it empties from the stomach without needing water.

Cheaper per gram of carbohydrate than most gels, and the caffeine-free flavours suit a teenager's tournament bag.

The catch. The GO Energy + Caffeine line is a different product. Read the label.

Any grocery storeBudget pick

Low-fat chocolate milk

Protein and fuel

SupportedFood, not a supplement

Mechanism

Roughly 3 to 4 g of carbohydrate per gram of protein: glycogen resynthesis and protein synthesis in one carton, plus sodium.

The most studied recovery drink that is not sold as one. Two cups after a hard session is a complete recovery snack.

Any grocery storeBudget pick

Bananas and pretzels

Protein and fuel

SupportedFood, not a supplement

Mechanism

Banana gives glucose and fructose; pretzels give starch and about 400 mg of sodium per serving to replace sweat losses.

The original tournament fuel, and still the best value per gram of carbohydrate on this page.

MomentousUpgrade

Essential Grass-Fed Whey

Protein and fuel

SupportedNSF + Informed Sport

Mechanism

Whey isolate with the same leucine signal; the grass-fed sourcing changes the story on the label, not the amino acids in the muscle.

Holds both NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport, useful if your league tests under either system.

The catch. The premium buys certification breadth, not better protein.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

MaurtenUpgrade

Gel 100

Protein and fuel

SupportedInformed Sport

Mechanism

25 g of glucose and fructose, which use separate gut transporters (SGLT1 and GLUT5), so more carbohydrate gets absorbed per minute.

Between matches on a long day, one gel tops up blood glucose without the stomach sloshing a sandwich would cause.

The catch. Expensive for sugar. A banana does most of this.

Klean Athlete

Klean Isolate

Protein and fuel

SupportedNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Whey isolate, so lactose is mostly filtered out, with the same leucine trigger and complete amino acid profile.

About 20 g of protein per scoop, short ingredient list, available unflavoured for mixing into oats.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Ladder

Plant Protein

Protein and fuel

SupportedNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Pea and pumpkin protein, about 21 g per serving, complete enough to drive synthesis at a full scoop.

A second vegan option. Contains a little tart cherry, which is a flavour, not a dose.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Fage

Total plain Greek yogurt

Protein and fuel

SupportedFood, not a supplement

Mechanism

Strained yogurt concentrates casein, a slow-digesting protein that keeps amino acids elevated for hours, which is why it suits a pre-bed snack.

About 20 g of protein per cup. Add fruit and honey for the carbohydrate.

Honey Stinger

Organic Energy Chews

Protein and fuel

SupportedFood, not a supplement

Mechanism

Tapioca syrup and honey: fast glucose and fructose in a form you can eat in two bites during a timeout.

A food, not a supplement, so certification is not the standard here. Pick a caffeine-free flavour.

The catch. Some flavours contain caffeine. Check before a night match.

Gatorade

Thirst Quencher powder

Protein and fuel

SupportedFood, not a supplement

Mechanism

A 6% carbohydrate solution with sodium: the concentration that empties from the stomach fastest while still fuelling.

Mixed from powder it costs a fraction of the bottles. Sessions under an hour only need water.

ThorneTop pick

Creatine

Evidence-backed supplements

SupportedNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Raises muscle phosphocreatine by about 20%, so ATP regenerates faster in the first ten seconds of every jump and sprint.

3 to 5 g a day, every day, no loading needed. Plain monohydrate is the form every trial used.

The catch. Under 18: talk it through with a parent and a clinician first. The water gain is intracellular, not bloat.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Read the Truth Engine audit
Momentous

Creatine (Creapure)

Evidence-backed supplements

SupportedNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Same molecule, same phosphocreatine mechanism; Creapure is a German-made monohydrate with a long purity record.

Pick on price and availability. Creatine monohydrate is creatine monohydrate.

The catch. Under 18: parent and clinician first.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Klean Athlete

Klean-D 1,000 IU

Evidence-backed supplements

ConditionalNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Vitamin D3 is converted to calcitriol, which drives calcium absorption and acts on receptors in muscle; it only helps if you were low.

Only after a blood test shows insufficiency, at the dose your clinician sets. Indoor winter athletes are the usual candidates.

The catch. Fat-soluble, so more is not better. Doses above 2,000 IU a day want monitoring.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Thorne

Iron Bisglycinate

Evidence-backed supplements

ConditionalNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Iron is the core of haemoglobin and myoglobin; chelated bisglycinate is absorbed with fewer gut side effects than ferrous sulfate.

Only if ferritin is tested low. Female and vegetarian athletes are at higher risk, which is a reason to test, not to guess.

The catch. Iron overload is real and iron is the most common cause of accidental poisoning in young children. Never self-prescribe.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Momentous

Collagen Peptides

Evidence-backed supplements

ConditionalNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Supplies glycine and proline, rate-limiting for collagen synthesis, into the window that tendon loading opens. Vitamin C is the cofactor.

About 15 g with vitamin C, 30 to 60 minutes before a tendon loading session. The loading is the drug; this is the delivery truck.

The catch. Under 18: parent and clinician first. It does not travel to your knee because the label says joint.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Read the Truth Engine audit
Thorne

Magnesium Bisglycinate

Evidence-backed supplements

ConditionalNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Magnesium is a cofactor for ATP; bisglycinate is well absorbed and gentle on the gut. Fixes a deficiency, does little without one.

Worth it only if your intake is genuinely low (few nuts, seeds, legumes, or greens). Food is the better route.

The catch. It will almost certainly not stop your cramps. Cramp is a nervous system event.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Maurten

Gel 100 CAF 100

Evidence-backed supplements

ConditionalInformed Sport

Mechanism

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, lowering perceived effort; 100 mg here, with a half-life of roughly five hours.

Listed for completeness and for adult readers. Caffeine at 3 mg/kg is a real ergogenic aid.

The catch. Not recommended for under-18s on this platform; the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against caffeine for adolescents. A 4 pm dose is still half there at 9 pm.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Cheribundi

Tart Cherry Gummies, Pure

Evidence-backed supplements

UnderpoweredNSF Certified for Sport

Mechanism

Anthocyanins are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in vitro, and Montmorency cherries contain a little melatonin. The trials are small.

The certified tart cherry option, if you want to try it during a congested tournament stretch, not all season.

The catch. Twenty-person trials, and daily antioxidants may blunt training adaptation. Avoid the Sleep version, which adds melatonin and ashwagandha.

Under 18? Decide with a parent and a clinician, not a label.

Read the Truth Engine audit
Manta SleepTop pick

Manta Sleep Mask

Sleep

Supported

Mechanism

Blocks light from reaching melanopsin cells in the retina, which otherwise signal the brain to suppress melatonin.

The eye cups sit off the eyelids, so it stays comfortable through REM. Best for hotel rooms on tournament weekends.

The sunTop pick

Morning outdoor light

Sleep

Supported

Mechanism

Bright light within an hour of waking anchors the circadian clock, so melatonin rises earlier that night.

Ten minutes outside, even overcast, delivers more lux than any indoor lamp. Free, and better than coffee.

Mack'sBudget pick

Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs

Sleep

Supported

Mechanism

Cuts noise that triggers micro-arousals, the brief wakings that fragment deep sleep even when you do not remember them.

Studies pairing earplugs with eye masks show better sleep in noisy rooms. Costs less than a sports drink.

Any brandBudget pick

Analog alarm clock

Sleep

Conditional

Mechanism

The clock is not the intervention. Getting the phone out of the bedroom removes late light and late scrolling, which delay sleep onset.

The cheapest sleep upgrade there is, and the one that actually changes behaviour.

HatchUpgrade

Restore 3

Sleep

Underpowered

Mechanism

A sunrise lamp that ramps up light before your alarm; plausible circadian effect, but it is far dimmer than real daylight.

Pleasant for dark winter mornings. Buy curtains and go outside first.

The catch. Expensive for what the evidence supports.

Loop

Quiet 2

Sleep

Supported

Mechanism

Same noise-blocking mechanism in reusable silicone, softer for side sleepers.

A reusable upgrade if foam plugs irritate your ears.

NICETOWN

Blackout Curtains

Sleep

Supported

Mechanism

Keeps the room dark into the morning so early light does not advance your wake time before your sleep debt is paid.

The whole-room version of a sleep mask, and the better choice if you share a room.

Yogasleep

Dohm Classic

Sleep

Underpowered

Mechanism

Steady broadband sound masks sudden noises, raising the threshold for arousal; the sleep-quality trials are small and mixed.

Useful in a loud house. Not a sleep treatment.

Cold PodTop pick

The Cold Pod

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

Water conducts heat about 25 times faster than air, so 10 to 15 minutes at 10 to 15 °C genuinely cools muscle and reduces perceived soreness.

A portable inflatable tub. Use it between tournament days, when playing again tomorrow is the goal.

The catch. Not after lifting. Cold blunts the signalling that builds muscle.

Read the Truth Engine audit
ChattanoogaBudget pick

ColPac reusable cold pack

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

Cooling slows nerve conduction velocity, so pain signals fire less; good analgesia, with no evidence it speeds healing.

The clinic-standard gel pack. Ten to fifteen minutes with a thin towel between pack and skin.

The catch. Current guidance (PEACE and LOVE) favours protection and early loading over aggressive icing.

Ice BarrelUpgrade

Ice Barrel 400

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

Upright barrel that submerges legs and torso, so more tissue is cooled with less water and ice.

Only worth it for a household that will use it several times a week during competition season.

The catch. A thousand dollars for the same mechanism a stock tank delivers.

Read the Truth Engine audit
Rubbermaid Commercial

100-gallon stock tank

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

The same water physics as any plunge: conduction, hydrostatic pressure, and vasoconstriction.

The classic do-it-yourself cold tub. Add bags of ice; a thermometer tells you more than a brand does.

The catch. Never alone, never with your head under, and never colder than about 10 °C.

Read the Truth Engine audit
Aircast

Cryo/Cuff Ankle

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

Combines cold with compression from a gravity-fed cooler, limiting swelling in the first days after a sprain.

Useful in the acute window after an ankle sprain if a clinician recommends it.

The catch. Pricey for a few days of use. A cold pack and an elastic wrap cover most of it.

Thermophore

MaxHeat moist heat pack

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

Moist heat raises tissue temperature and blood flow, making collagen more extensible and stiffness less painful.

For chronic stiffness and tight backs, not fresh injuries. Heat on day one of a sprain increases swelling.

Sunbeam

XpressHeat heating pad

Cold and heat

Conditional

Mechanism

Dry heat, same vasodilation and tissue warming mechanism, slightly less penetrating than moist heat.

The budget heat option. Use the auto shut-off; never sleep on it.

Almost Heaven Saunas

Barrel sauna

Cold and heat

Underpowered

Mechanism

Heat stress raises plasma volume and heat shock proteins; the cardiovascular data are observational Finnish cohorts, not recovery trials.

The Atlas covers the Finnish tradition on its own terms. As a recovery purchase, use a gym or pool sauna first.

The catch. Several thousand dollars for an effect nobody has measured in teenage athletes. Hydrate, and never after a concussion.

TriggerPointTop pick

GRID Foam Roller

Soft tissue

Conditional

Mechanism

Pressure stimulates mechanoreceptors that turn down pain and raise stretch tolerance for about an hour. Neural, not structural.

Ninety seconds per muscle group in the warm-up. The hollow core keeps its shape for years.

Lacrosse ball

Soft tissue

Mechanism

A slightly softer ball with a textured surface; same mechanism as a lacrosse ball, gentler on sensitive spots.

Good if a lacrosse ball is too intense.

Therabody

Theragun Relief

Soft tissue

Overstated

Mechanism

Rapid percussion drives vibration and pressure afferents, a short-lived gate on pain and a bump in range of motion.

A fine warm-up tool if you already own one. The cheapest model does everything the expensive ones do.

The catch. It does not break up scar tissue, flush lactate, or speed repair. The effect is mostly gone within the hour.

Read the Truth Engine audit
Hyperice

Hypervolt Go 2

Soft tissue

Overstated

Mechanism

Same percussive mechanism in a lighter, quieter body; same neural effects, same lack of structural ones.

If you want a gun in the tournament bag, the small one is enough.

The catch. A foam roller buys roughly the same effect for a quarter of the price.

195 Ultralite Ankle Brace

Compression and support

Supported

Mechanism

Lace-up and strap design limits inversion range and speed at landing, the exact motion that tears the ATFL.

A lace-up brace of this design was used in a large randomized trial in high school basketball that cut acute ankle injuries substantially.

The catch. A brace is not rehab. Pair it with balance training.

ZamstUpgrade

A2-DX Ankle Brace

Compression and support

Supported

Mechanism

Lace-up base with a rigid side guard, aimed at blocking inversion on the landings that follow a block.

The premium option, popular with volleyball players for the low profile.

Med Spec

ASO Ankle Stabilizer

Compression and support

Supported

Mechanism

Lace-up with figure-eight straps that mimic a tape job, limiting inversion without restricting the plantarflexion a jump needs.

Common on volleyball courts, fits in a court shoe, and costs less than a season of tape.

Active Ankle

T2 Ankle Brace

Compression and support

Supported

Mechanism

A rigid hinged stirrup: blocks inversion while letting the ankle flex up and down freely.

Faster to put on than lace-ups. Some players find it bulky in low-profile court shoes.

Mizuno

LR6 Knee Pads

Compression and support

Utility

Mechanism

Foam that spreads impact over a larger area when you dive, so the patella and prepatellar bursa take less peak pressure.

Standard volleyball equipment. They prevent bruises and bursitis, not ligament injuries.

Cho-Pat

Original Knee Strap

Compression and support

Underpowered

Mechanism

Pressure below the kneecap may change strain on the patellar tendon and adds a sensory cue that dulls pain.

Some jumpers report less pain while playing. It is a symptom tool for while you do the real rehab.

The catch. Small studies only. Heavy slow loading and decline squats treat jumper's knee; the strap does not.

Bauerfeind

GenuTrain knee support

Compression and support

Underpowered

Mechanism

Knit compression with a silicone ring around the kneecap; plausible proprioceptive and warmth effects, thin trial data in athletes.

Comfortable and well made. Buy it if it helps you feel confident, not because it heals.

The catch. About $130 for an effect nobody has measured well.

KT Tape

KT Tape Pro

Compression and support

Overstated

Mechanism

Elastic tape stretches skin and adds a sensory cue; the claims about lifting fascia and draining lymph are not supported.

Meta-analyses find effects on pain and performance that are small and often no bigger than sham taping.

The catch. Not a substitute for rigid athletic tape or a brace on an unstable ankle.

CEP

Compression socks

Compression and support

Overstated

Mechanism

Graded pressure helps venous return; real in medicine, worth about one point of soreness on a ten-point scale in healthy athletes.

Reasonable on a long bus or flight to a tournament. Not a recovery strategy.

Digital bathroom scale

Hydration

Supported

Mechanism

Weigh before and after a session; each kilogram lost, plus what you drank, is about one litre of sweat (the Sawka method).

ConditionalInformed Sport

Mechanism

1,500 mg of sodium per litre, close to what salty sweaters lose, which keeps plasma volume up and thirst signals honest.

Before anything goes in your mouth

The supplement rules, stated once and plainly.

An amber supplement bottle tipped over on a blush background

Under 18, a parent and a clinician decide with you.

Not a coach, not a teammate, not a label. Bring the product to the conversation and this page with it.

Certification is required, and it is per batch.

Every supplement here is listed as NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport. Supplements are not approved before sale in the US, and contamination with banned substances is documented. Check the lot number on nsfsport.com or wetestyoutrust.com before you buy.

Test, then treat.

Iron only if ferritin is tested low. Vitamin D only if a blood test shows insufficiency. Guessing at either can cause harm.

Food first, always.

Protein powder is convenient food. Chocolate milk, Greek yogurt, and a real dinner do the same job, and carry no contamination risk.

Caffeine is not on the teenage menu.

It is a genuine ergogenic aid for adults. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against it for adolescents, and its five-hour half-life eats into the sleep that matters more.

Education, not diagnosis. This is a science education platform. Nothing here replaces a physician, a physical therapist, or an athletic trainer. Sudden severe pain, numbness, an inability to bear weight, or visible deformity means stop reading and get seen.

Instead: Single-ingredient products with a dose you can read and a certification you can check.

CBD recovery balms

Human trials for exercise recovery are few and small, independent tests keep finding labels that do not match contents, and undeclared THC can still fail a drug test.

Instead: A heat pack for stiffness. Explain Pain for persistent pain.

07Underpowered

Red-light panels for recovery

Cytochrome c oxidase genuinely absorbs red light. Everything after that sentence is a parameter-reporting crisis, and your panel probably is not delivering a studied dose.

Instead: Wait for better trials. Not a no, not yet a yes.

08Supported

Beta-alanine for volleyball

Supported, and narrow: it buffers acid in efforts lasting one to four minutes. A volleyball rally lasts seconds, so it is the right supplement for the wrong sport.

Instead: Creatine, which fuels exactly the ten-second efforts volleyball is made of.

09Conditional

Ibuprofen for routine soreness

It works on the pain. That is the problem: the prostaglandin pathway it blocks is also part of the remodelling pathway.

Instead: Sleep, protein, and an easy day. Medication decisions belong with a clinician.

10Conditional

Magnesium for cramps

Fixes a real deficiency and almost certainly will not stop your cramps. The Cochrane review found no benefit for ordinary muscle cramp.

Instead: Cramp is a nervous system event: fatigue and load are the levers.
